Should I Overseed my Lawn before or after Leveling It?

You should always level your lawn before you begin overseeding. Proper site preparation is the key to ensuring your new grass seed has the best chance to germinate and thrive.

Following our professional process ensures a level and healthy seedbed:

  • Aerate first: We recommend core aeration to relieve soil compaction and create channels for air and water. This should be done before any leveling or seeding occurs.
  • Fill and level: After aeration, identify low spots or depressions. Fill these areas with quality topsoil, building a depth of 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) to support healthy rooting. Rake the surface until it is uniformly smooth.
  • Fertilize: Once the surface is level and debris-free, apply a phosphorus-rich starter fertilizer. This provides the nutritional support seedlings need to develop a deep root system.
  • Overseed last: With the soil level and fertilized, you can then distribute your seed evenly. This sequence prevents your seeds from being buried too deeply or washed away in uneven low spots.

Keep in mind that results may vary depending on site conditions, weather, and maintenance. We invite you to contact us for a free onsite quote, as an inspection of your specific property will help us determine the best approach for your lawn.
