Why Chilliwack Homeowners Choose Paver Patios
Pavers suit the Fraser Valley because the surface is made of many small units rather than one solid slab. When the ground moves slightly through wet winters and the occasional freeze, the joints flex instead of cracking, and a damaged stone can be lifted and replaced without rebuilding the whole patio.
- Back-door seating areas that replace a muddy patch of lawn.
- Entertaining patios sized for a dining table, barbecue and lounge chairs.
- Fire pit areas set a safe distance from the house and fences.
- Level platforms on sloped lots, often paired with retaining walls and steps.
- Stone paver decks, at ground level or raised, as a hard-wearing outdoor floor.
You choose the stone, colour and laying pattern, from classic running bond to herringbone or a mix of sizes, and we help you pick something that matches the house and the rest of the yard.
Paver Patios Built for Chilliwack Weather
A patio in Chilliwack has to handle months of rain, the odd deep freeze and soil that can shift as it wets and dries. Most patio problems, like sunken corners, rocking stones and puddles against the house, trace back to what’s underneath rather than the pavers themselves, so the base is where a good patio starts. Whether it’s a small seating pad off the back door or a larger entertaining area, you choose the stone, pattern and colour.
Many patio projects tie in with paver walkways or outdoor steps, and with the planting around them. How We Build a Paver Patio
- Plan the space. At the free consultation we mark out the size, talk about furniture and traffic, and choose stone and pattern.
- Excavate. Soil and turf are dug out to the depth the base needs, and the bottom is shaped to the planned slope.
- Add and compact the base. Crushed gravel goes in layers, each one compacted, to create a firm foundation.
- Screed the bedding layer. A thin, even layer of bedding material is levelled to set the final height of the stones.
- Lay the pavers. Stones are laid in your pattern, cut to fit the edges and held in place with edge restraint.
- Joint and compact. Jointing sand is swept into the gaps and the surface is compacted so the units lock together.
Base, Slope and Drainage for Patios
A patio that sinks or puddles almost always failed below the surface. On Chilliwack clay and silt the ground holds water, so the base has to be deep enough and well compacted to carry weight without settling, and the surface needs a gentle fall so rain runs off rather than sitting on the stones.
We set that slope to carry water away from the house foundation, toward lawn, beds or another spot where it can soak in. Where a patio sits against a slope, a retaining wall may be needed to hold back soil and keep the patio area level.
Stone Paver Decks
A stone paver deck is an outdoor deck area surfaced with pavers instead of wood or composite boards. It can sit at ground level, much like a patio, or be raised so the surface meets a back door, terrace or upper part of the yard. Because the surface is stone, there are no boards to stain, rot or replace, which suits damp Fraser Valley winters.
Paver decks are built the same careful way as our patios, starting with a compacted base and a slope that carries rain away. Raised areas also need the sides retained so the platform stays solid. We do not build wood or composite decks; if a deck-style outdoor space is what you want, a stone paver deck is how we deliver it.
Choosing Pavers, Patterns and Size
Start with how you will use the space. A small bistro table needs much less room than a dining set for eight, and a barbecue needs clearance around it. Mark the furniture out on the lawn before deciding on size; most people find they want a little more space than they first thought.
For the stone itself, consider colour against the house siding, texture underfoot and how much moss and dirt will show in shady spots. Larger slabs give a clean, modern look, while smaller units and patterns like herringbone feel more traditional. A border in a contrasting colour helps frame the patio and tie it to walkways or steps.
Paver Patio FAQs
It is a deck-style outdoor area surfaced with concrete or stone pavers rather than wood or composite boards. It can be built at ground level or raised to meet a doorway or terrace. Hughes builds stone paver decks, not wood or composite decks, so there are no boards to stain, seal or replace over time.
With a well-compacted base and proper edge restraint, a paver patio can last for decades. Individual stones can be lifted and reset if a spot settles or a unit is damaged, which is a big advantage over poured concrete. Topping up jointing sand and keeping weeds out of the joints helps it age well.
Pavers cost more to install than a plain concrete slab, but they handle ground movement better, can be fixed unit by unit and offer far more choice of colour and pattern. Poured concrete can crack as Fraser Valley soils wet and dry, and repairs usually show.
It depends on the soil and what the patio will carry. Foot-traffic patios on firm ground need less depth than areas on soft clay or near downspouts. We assess the soil at the consultation and build the base to suit, because the base, not the stone, is what keeps a patio level.
Sealing is optional. It can deepen colour, make stains easier to clean and help hold jointing sand in place, but many patios look fine without it. If you prefer a sealed finish, it is normally applied after the patio has settled. We can talk through the pros and cons for your stone.
Keep the joints full of sand, sweep debris off regularly and pull small weeds early before they root deeply. Polymeric jointing sand hardens once wet and resists weeds and washout better than plain sand. Moss is common in shady Chilliwack yards, and a stiff brush handles most of it.
Yes. On a slope we either cut into the grade or build it up with a retaining wall to create a level platform, then add steps to connect it to the house or lawn. Sloped lots in Promontory and other hillside areas often get the most use out of a level patio.
