Why Choose Sod for Your Chilliwack Lawn
Sod gives you a finished-looking lawn the day it goes down, while seed can take a full season to fill in. In the Fraser Valley that difference matters: a seeded yard sits as bare soil through rain and is quickly taken over by weeds and moss, while sod covers the ground right away and helps hold soil in place on gentle slopes.
- New-build lots where the builder left hard-packed fill with barely any topsoil on top.
- Lawn replacement when the old grass is patchy, mossy or full of weeds.
- Families and pets who want a usa
New Sod Lawns Across Chilliwack
A new lawn in Chilliwack succeeds or fails on what’s underneath it. Many local properties sit on heavy clay, silt or peat, and new-build lots often have compacted fill with very little topsoil. That’s why we prepare the soil before any sod goes down, so the roots have somewhere to go. Spring and early fall are usually the easiest times to establish sod here, thanks to milder temperatures and regular rain, but we can also install in other seasons with proper preparation and care.
Once your lawn is down, our yard maintenance crew can keep it mowed and edged. Prefer no mowing at all? See artificial turf in Chilliwack. For a complete yard makeover, begin with Chilliwack landscape design and a free on-site consultation, and see the neighbourhoods we serve.
How We Install Sod, Step by Step
- Remove the old surface. Existing grass, weeds and debris are stripped so the new sod sits on clean soil.
- Loosen and improve the soil. Compacted ground is broken up and topsoil is added where the existing soil is thin, heavy or poor.
- Grade for drainage. The area is shaped so water runs away from the house and does not pool in the middle of the lawn.
- Roll and level. The surface is firmed and raked smooth so the finished lawn is even underfoot and easy to mow.
- Lay the sod. Rolls are laid tight with staggered seams, trimmed around beds and edges, and rolled for good soil contact.
- Water in. The new lawn is soaked right away, and we explain how often to water while the roots take hold.
Soil and Drainage Under a Chilliwack Lawn
Grass roots need loose, moist soil that also drains. Much of Chilliwack has the opposite: heavy clay or silt that stays wet in winter and bakes hard in a dry August. Sod laid straight onto that kind of ground often struggles, with shallow roots, standing water and yellow patches.
Good preparation fixes most of this before the sod arrives. Breaking up compaction, adding a proper layer of topsoil and grading the surface so water moves away gives roots room to grow downward. In the first few weeks, deep, regular watering matters more than anything else, especially if the sod goes down as the weather warms up.
Caring for New Sod in the First Month
The first few weeks decide whether new sod knits into the soil or stays as loose rolls sitting on top. Water deeply so moisture reaches the soil under the sod, paying extra attention to edges, seams and areas near pavement that dry out first. Keep kids, pets and heavy furniture off while the roots grow down.
Hold off on fertilizing until the lawn is rooted, and make the first few mowings on a high setting. If a seam opens or a corner lifts, press it back down and water it. After about a month most lawns are ready for regular care, and our lawn care service can take it from there.
Sod Installation FAQs
Spring and early fall are usually easiest because temperatures are mild and rain helps the roots establish. Sod can go down in summer too, but it needs much more watering in hot, dry spells. We generally avoid laying it on frozen or waterlogged ground, which makes good soil contact hard to achieve.
Keep foot traffic light for the first couple of weeks while the roots grow into the soil below. A simple test is to lift a corner gently: if it resists, the roots are taking hold. Heavy play, pets and furniture are best kept off until the lawn is firmly rooted.
New sod needs to stay moist through the soil underneath, not just on top. In the first week that usually means watering every day, more in hot weather, then gradually spacing it out as the roots grow. We give you watering guidance suited to the season your lawn is installed.
Sod costs more up front but gives you a usable lawn far sooner, controls erosion right away and is less likely to fill with weeds. Seed is cheaper but needs careful watering and patience, and Fraser Valley rain can wash it out. For most homeowners who want a lawn quickly, sod is the simpler route.
Usually once the grass has grown a little taller than normal mowing height and the roots have taken hold, often a couple of weeks after installation. Mow on a high setting with a sharp blade, and avoid mowing when the lawn is soaking wet so the mower does not leave ruts.

The most common cause is not enough water reaching the soil beneath, especially along edges and seams that dry out first. Other causes include gaps between rolls, poor soil contact or very compacted ground underneath. Check moisture by lifting a corner; if the soil below is dry, water more deeply.
