A retaining wall is a structure that holds back soil where the ground changes level, turning a slope into flat, usable space. Hughes Landscaping builds retaining walls in Chilliwack for sloped yards, terraced gardens, raised beds and level patio areas, starting with a free on-site consultation.
Why Build a Retaining Wall?
Slopes take up space you could be using. A wall lets you cut into or build up the grade so you get a level lawn, patio or garden bed, and it keeps soil from slumping onto paths, driveways or neighbouring properties during heavy rain.
- Hillside lots on Promontory, Ryder Lake and the edges of the city that need flat space for living and play.
- Level patio platforms where a patio meets a bank.
- Terraced gardens that break one steep slope into several planted levels.
- Raised planting beds that lift plants above soggy valley-floor soil.
- Edges of driveways and walkways where soil keeps washing onto the hard surface.
- Strata and commercial sites with banks and planters along parking areas and entries.
Retaining Wall Materials
Most garden retaining walls we build use segmental concrete wall block, which stacks without mortar, comes in a range of colours and textures, and can match nearby pavers and steps. Natural stone suits a more rustic look. The right choice depends on the wall height, the look you want and what is around it.
Walls can be straight or curved, and capped with a finished top course. Steps can be built into a wall to connect levels, and planting along the top or base softens the face.
How We Build a Retaining Wall
- Assess the site. At a free consultation we look at the height of the slope, the soil, where water runs and what the wall needs to hold back.
- Plan the layout. We agree the line, height, material and any steps or curves, and check whether taller walls need more planning.
- Excavate. A trench is dug along the wall line and into the slope to make room for the base and drainage.
- Build the base. Crushed gravel is placed and compacted, and the first course is set level and partly below grade.
- Stack and backfill. Courses are stacked with the required setback, and drain rock is placed behind the wall as it rises.
- Install drainage. A perforated drain pipe at the base carries water out and away from behind the wall.
- Cap and finish. Caps are fixed on top, soil is graded, and planting or lawn is restored around the wall.
Drainage: Why Retaining Walls Fail
The biggest enemy of a retaining wall is water. Soil saturated by Fraser Valley rain is heavy, and if that water cannot escape it pushes against the back of the wall. Over time that pressure causes leaning, bulging and cracking.
Good walls deal with water deliberately. Clean drain rock behind the wall lets water move down rather than building up, a drain pipe at the base carries it out, and grading above the wall stops runoff from pouring over the top. A compacted base keeps the bottom course from settling into soft clay. These steps are hidden once the wall is finished, but they are what keep it standing straight.
Retaining Wall Permits and Planning
Small garden walls often need nothing more than careful construction, but taller walls, walls near property lines and walls holding up driveways, buildings or steep slopes may need permits and engineering. Requirements vary by municipality, so for taller walls it is worth confirming the rules with the City of Chilliwack or your local municipality before building. We will flag at the consultation if your wall is likely to need extra planning.
Retaining Walls for Chilliwack Properties
Chilliwack has both extremes: flat valley-floor lots that stay soggy in winter and hillside properties on Promontory, Ryder Lake and the edges of the city where every metre of level ground counts. On flat lots, low walls create raised beds and define spaces; on slopes, they make room for lawns, patios and play areas that would otherwise be impossible.
We plan walls alongside the rest of the yard, so a new wall can tie into outdoor steps, a patio or a planting bed rather than standing on its own.
Retaining Wall FAQs
It depends on the height of the wall, what it supports and where it sits on the property. Low garden walls often do not need one, while taller walls or walls near structures, slopes or property lines may need permits and engineering. Confirm current requirements with the City of Chilliwack before building.
For most residential walls, segmental concrete block is a practical choice: it is consistent, strong, built without mortar and comes in many finishes. Natural stone offers a more rustic look. The best material depends on the wall height, the load behind it and the look you want for the yard.
Most failures come from water pressure behind the wall, a base that was not compacted or a wall built too tall for its design. Without drain rock and a drain pipe, saturated soil pushes on the wall. Proper drainage and a solid base are what prevent leaning over time.
Short walls can be built with standard block and good drainage, but as height increases, so do the forces behind the wall. Taller walls may need reinforcement, engineering and a permit. Splitting a big grade change into two shorter terraced walls with a planted step between them is often a practical alternative.
Yes. Steps can be built into or alongside a retaining wall, using matching block or stone so they look like part of the same structure. This is a common way to connect a lawn to a raised patio or to climb between garden terraces on a sloped lot.
Yes. Old timber walls rot over time, especially in wet Fraser Valley soils, and often start to lean. We remove the old wall, build a new base and drainage, and replace it with block or stone. Replacing it is also a chance to adjust the height or layout.
